The debut single from singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey is a difficult one to judge. On the one hand it certainly does not sound like a song set to be released in 2011, but perhaps fifty or-so years before.
Combining a heart-melting melancholia with such deep lyrics, opening with an audible explosion and closing with a haunting piano, filling in the gap with soft strings and whimsical, compelling vocals, something nonetheless seems to be missing: maybe it’s the excitement expected from the current New York music scene; or maybe the virtually inaudible drum-beat that acts as a means of pulling the song together.
However, there’s no denying that Del Rey’s voice is so mellow and angelic that it is virtually impossible to dismiss. A very interesting track, leaving an air of curiosity as to what’ll be next from Lana Del Rey: perhaps a whole new musical movement?
