Album// Breathe Carolina, Hell Is What You Make It.

“Hell Is What You Make It” is the latest from American duo- Breathe Carolina. Falling respectively into the categories of both Electronica and Post-Hardcore, with their blend of electronic produced instrumentation beneath intertwining clean and screamed vocals.
Opening with “Wooly,” definitely the heaviest track on the album, with a trance inspired intro and throat ripping unclean vocals, yet  lacking consistency. As in going from the catchy, though cheesy, clean vocals backed by synthesizers, to a drop-tuned storming guitar riff backed by the distinguishable screamed vocals, then waltzing into a Euro-Techno sounding chorus; reminiscent of “The Smurfs Go Pop!”
However, first single from the album - “Blackout” sounds more professional, yet it is mesmerising as to how a band can go from sounding like the next big thing to come from the Post-Hardcore scene to somewhat mimicking Wham’s “Club Tropicana” era sound.
Also, “Edge Of Heaven” blends the clashing vocals to a much more professional extent, as does the more dub inspired “Sweat It Out,” yet still maintaining a dis-alluring, sleazy Basshunter-esque vibe. “Waiting,” however, is reasonably promising, boasting a 1980’s style,  nostalgic helicopter bass-line.
All in all, it’s interesting and awardingly creative, as to how a band can combine two distinctly different musical styles, from the heaviness of the Post-Hardcore scene, apparently in the midst of grappling the world and taking it by storm. To the euphoria that comes equipped with Electronica, seemingly having been forever evident within popular music. An innovative fusion, that just needs to be worked on a fraction and mixed to a more professional degree.

Jonathan Hatchman.
